Baby Health and Safe Parenting: The First Year, Month by Month

From the doctors at Healing Tree Hospital

Welcoming a newborn is a journey filled with joy, questions, and occasionally anxiety. Understanding basic infant care, setting up a safe sleep environment, and tracking developmental milestones go a long way towards keeping your child healthy. Our consultant paediatricians at Healing Tree Hospital, Indirapuram, see these questions every day. Here is what they most often explain to new parents.

Newborn care: the first 30 days

The first month of an infant's life involves rapid physiological adjustment. Key care guidelines include:

  • Keeping baby warm: Newborns cannot regulate body temperature efficiently, so dress your baby appropriately for the season.
  • Umbilical cord care: Keep the cord stump clean and dry until it drops off naturally, usually within 7 to 14 days. Avoid tight diapers or plastic covers over it.
  • Frequent feeding: Feed on demand, usually every 2 to 3 hours. Breastfed babies digest milk quickly and typically need 8 to 12 feeds in a 24-hour cycle.

Safe sleep: lowering the risk of SIDS

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a real concern for infants under one year. Safe-sleep practice reduces the risk:

  • Back to sleep: Always place your baby on their back to sleep, not on the stomach or side.
  • Firm sleep surface: Use a firm crib mattress with a tight-fitting sheet. Avoid soft bedding.
  • Keep the crib empty: No pillows, soft blankets, toys or bumper pads in the baby's sleep area.
  • Share a room, not a bed: Keep the crib in your bedroom, but avoid bed-sharing, which increases suffocation risk.

Tracking developmental milestones

Milestones are behaviours and physical skills that appear as infants grow. Every child develops at their own pace, but tracking these windows helps catch issues early:

  • By 2 months: responds to loud noises, tracks objects with the eyes, begins pushing up during tummy time.
  • By 4 months: babbles, holds the head steady without support, begins rolling from tummy to back.
  • By 6 months: responds to their name, rolls over in both directions, begins sitting without support.
  • By 9 months: develops a pincer grasp, crawls, and pulls to a stand.

For pre-term babies, milestones are counted from the original due date (the corrected age), not the birth date. Regular paediatric follow-ups help make sure your baby is growing on a healthy trajectory.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my newborn is getting enough milk?

A well-fed baby passes light-coloured urine 6 to 8 times a day, has regular bowel movements, and shows steady weight gain at clinic visits.

When should I seek immediate paediatric attention?

Come in without delay if your baby has fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, especially under 3 months of age, refuses feeds, vomits persistently, is unusually listless, or has any difficulty breathing.
