A kidney stone hurts when it moves into the narrow tube (ureter) between the kidney and bladder — sharp pain in the back or side that travels to the groin, often with blood in the urine or vomiting. Stones under about 5 mm usually pass on their own within a few weeks with fluids and pain relief. Larger stones, fever with infection, or a blocked kidney need a urologist promptly.
