Haemodialysis does part of the kidneys' work. Blood is pumped from your fistula or catheter through a filter, the dialyser, where waste products and extra water pass across a thin membrane into a cleaning fluid, and the cleaned blood flows back to you. A session usually takes about four hours, and most people need it two or three times a week.

It takes about six weeks or more to mature, but it lasts longer and causes far fewer infections and clots than a catheter. A catheter can be used straight away, so it often bridges the gap — which is why a fistula is best made before dialysis is needed.
