The commonest cause is BPPV: tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear drift into one of the balance canals. When you turn in bed or look up, they roll and send a false 'spinning' signal that lasts under a minute. A doctor confirms it with a simple head-positioning test, and a repositioning manoeuvre such as the Epley manoeuvre moves the crystals back, often fixing it in one or two sessions. Vertigo with weakness, slurred speech or double vision is an emergency.

The sinuses are air spaces in the cheekbones and forehead that drain into the nose. A cold swells their lining for a few days; if the drainage stays blocked, mucus builds up — pain or pressure in the face, a blocked nose, thick discharge and a poor sense of smell. Most sinusitis is viral and settles in about 10 days. Symptoms beyond 10 days, getting worse after improving, or high fever with swelling around the eyes need a doctor.

Usually not first. Chronic sinusitis is treated with medicines, sprays and washes, guided by a nasal endoscopy and, if needed, a CT of the sinuses done on campus. Endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is offered when that fails — performed here by our ENT surgeons.
